Dimensioning ATM Networks with Uncertain Traffic Demands

چکیده

We consider a network planning method that takes into consideration the uncertainties associated with offered traffics when dimensioning ATM networks for prescribed grades of service. Assuming that each reference traffic stream offered between a pair of nodes in a network can only be specified within a lower and upper bound, together with a best guess value, we demonstrate a method for transforming these 3 values into a single traffic figure that takes uncertainty into consideration for a specified confidence level. We show that by using these new traffic values in the dimensioning process, specified call-based grades of service can be achieved.

It is a critical issue in network dimensioning that the characterization of traffic at the call level should be accurate enough to provide the designer with reliable tools for dimensioning the transmission and switching capacities. Since in B-ISDN the nature of traffic is expected to be very different from traditional telephone traffic with much more complex features, therefore, new methods are...

Dimensioning and Resource Management of ATM Networks

This paper addresses the dimensioning and resource management of ATM networks. We show the importance of the effective bandwidth approximation and of the virtual path concept and explain how dimensioning and resource management problems are formulated and what are the related issues (routing, admission control, survivability and traffic variability). We conclude by giving two examples of dimens...

Analysis and Dimensioning of Credit-based Flow Control for the Abr Service in Atm Networks

ATM networks have shown to reveal difficulties in simultaneously guaranteeing the requested Quality-of-Service while efficiently utilizing all the available bandwidth for economic reasons. The ABR (available bit rate) service class was designed to fill the gap of bandwidth with less delay but loss sensitive traffic. Due to the bursty nature of higher-priority traffic and the resulting bandwidth...

On the Impact of Long-Range-Dependent Traffic in Dimensioning ATM Network Buffer

Recent measurements of packet networks have shown that packet traffic exhibits long-range-dependent property. Studies have also discovered that this property is not adequately captured by the conventional Markov traffic models and often yields queueing behavior such as heavy-tailed or subexponential queue length distribution. These findings have led to the implication that long-range-dependent ...

The Danger of Data Traffic Models 31 April 1995

Emerging ATM networks are being dimensioned to carry the data traffic seen on today's LANs and WANs. The modelling of such traffic is therefore not only of interest from the point of view of advancing networking science, but one could even go as far as describing it is a "hot topic". This paper gives a resume of work that has been done and that is underway (a large amount of it in the COST proj...
